FLIGHTS TO LEGAZPI

PLANE FLIGHTS to and from Legazpi are like jeepneys plying Daraga-Legazpi.

There’s a flight coming in and out almost one after the other. I wonder if using smaller aircraft is more commercially viable that the larger Airbus A-320 or the Boeing, given the present passenger load profile or demand.

But I find the Bombardier Q400 turboprop used by PAL more comfortable than the ATR 72 of Cebu Pacific. (The old Fokker is also stable in flight as I’ve rode one during a storm and the plane was like a bucking bronco for some hours.)

But the good news is unlike in the old airport, take-off and landings are possible in the new BIA even during orange rainfall warning and otherwise sunset limitations (though the old airport has runway lights and Simple Approach Lighting Systems too). Thanks to the newer navigational equipment and the new site that’s far from flight obstructions some Navi aids may be prone to errors.

The Ligñon Hill in the old airport and the proximity of Mayon Volcano erroneously “reflects electronic signals” that in some instances flights has to be canceled due to poor visibility brought by extreme precipitation.

Ground vibration caused by vehicular traffic along Magayon Drive also then posed problems with the DVOR. That’s the reason why we lobbied at the LGU concerned for the restriction of vehicles passing Magayon Drive to only 4,500 Gross Vehicle Weight.

Another plus is you can go to Manila as early as 5:00 am and be back late in the afternoon. I tried it during the “Bulilit Flights in the ‘80s when I filed some pleadings at the OSG and has to be back on the same day.

Hopefully, the twice-daily flights to Cebu is resumed.

Be safe everyone.
